This video introduces the concept of light, it’s nature and how we perceive it. We then move to discuss the history of performance lightning and how we have moved from the sun being the only light source used in performances to where we are today. Lastly, we discuss some basic physics, the concept of electricity and the laws of reflection and refraction to lay the foundation for the next lessons.
infocus
INFOCUS is a performance lighting course designed by Tech Quartet in collaboration with Studio Safdar. This course is designed to act as a starting point for people to step into the world of performance lighting, understand what light is, what it can do, and most importantly understand how it changes and elevates any performance.

Lighting design as an art form isn’t popularized the way it deserves to be considering it can make or break a show. As a response to this thought we wanted to design a short course to introduce people to performance lighting and show them how it changes a performance. How it creates spaces and tells its own stories. The idea is to expose as many people as possible to the art of lighting. This is something that we have wanted to put together for a long time, but it finally came together this year owing to the pandemic grinding live shows to a halt.

COURSE STRUCTURE
The course is broken down into three sections.

-
Pre Recorded Lessons
We have collaborated with Studio Safdar, New Delhi, to shoot and put together 9 PRE-RECORDED VIDEO LESSONS in their Black Box Theatre. Through these lessons, we have tried to capture as many aspects of lighting and its use in performance as we can. From a basic question like ‘what is light?’ leading up to design and operation of shows. The course also talks about how a lighting designer fits into the larger picture where different backstage departments work together in synergy to put together a performance or a live event.
-
Live sessions with Tech Quartet over Zoom
Tech Quartet organizes 2 live interactive sessions over Zoom to address doubts, observations, and further questions that the participants might have had while going through the course. Homework given to the participants through the course will also be discussed in these sessions.
-
Live sessions with other Lighting Designers from the country over Zoom
Apart from Tech Quartet, we also want the participants to learn from other designers who have established themselves in the industry. People whose work, we as designers follow. Which is why we decide to call lighting designers from different performance mediums of Theatre, Dance, and Music to come and share their process of design and their understanding of the field.
This video focuses on the documentation or the paperwork involved in this profession. How to translate the design ideas onto a piece of paper to communicate and work with the team from the performance venue as well as to make the operation part easier. This includes the Light plot, Technical rider, Patch Sheet, Cue sheet and Cheat sheet.
Through this video, we highlight the ways in which lighting can affect how the audience views a performance and how we as lighting designers guide their eyes. We talk about the various functions that lighting performs to communicate the narrative better.
